Thus, it is urged that it move from being exclusively about the “Right to the integrity of the person” to adding “and to bodily autonomy”, in such a way that its final wording preaches that: “Every person has the right to bodily autonomy, to free, informed, full and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, and to all related health services without discrimination, including access to safe and legal abortion.”
Last Tuesday, the bishops of the Commission of Episcopal Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) expressed their rejection of this declaration, emphasizing that abortion “goes in the opposite direction to the real promotion of women and their rights.”
This has not been the only attempt to promote the inclusion of abortion as a fundamental right in the European Union from its Parliament. In July 2022another resolution was approved that asked to include in article 7 of the CDF, dedicated to respect for private and family life, the following reference: “Every person has the right to a safe and legal abortion.”
