The Municipality of Salcajá, in the department of Quetzaltenango, indicates in its website that the Concepción la Conquistadora Hermitage is considered the first Catholic temple built in Central America. Furthermore, it is claimed that on May 12, 1524, the first Eucharist was celebrated in this historic temple.
Given this event, the bishops invited all the faithful in the country to “live with joy” the days of the celebration of the National Eucharistic Congress, recognizing that “from the Eucharist arise love, solidarity, justice and the construction of peace, so necessary in our land.”
The bishops stressed in their statement that the Eucharist is “the best food on the path to God,” also being “the first place of encounter with the living Jesus Christ.”
