Funncofrades: Store creates Funko-style Catholic figures of Jesus and the Virgin Mary

In Spain, the religious items store Seville Prints has managed to merge Catholicism with pop culture in a product that is attracting the attention of more than one on social networks: the fun “Funncofrades”.

The Funncofrades are religious figures, created with resin, inspired by the style of the famous “Funko Pop” dolls. Created by Daniel Cava, store manager, this project has surprised many for its fresh and accessible proposal to bring faith to new generations.

“We started in a room, in my parents’ house, in the Montequinto neighborhood,” says Daniel in an interview with ACI Prensa, when remembering the origins of Estampas Sevilla.

“It all started because I liked to make photographic montages and my friends started asking me for stamps. Each time the orders were larger, so I decided to focus completely on it,” he said.

In its first years, the company was dedicated exclusively to printing religious prints, a niche that grew until the pandemic hit. “COVID-19 forced us to reinvent ourselves and expand the range of products. That’s when we started thinking about something new and different,” Daniel explained.

It was during this transformation process that the idea of creating the Funncofrades arose. “A friend of mine, Pepe from Perfiles3D, offered me the idea. At first it shocked me, but when I saw the acceptance it had, we decided to focus on them.”

Among the first characters that came to light is the Nazarene Jesus, a figure traditionally associated with brotherhoods, available in various models that represent different moments of the Passion of Christ. You can also find Funncofrades of the Virgin Mary, among others.

“We wanted to recreate sacred images with a childlike aesthetic, to make them attractive to the youngest,” says Daniel.

The key to the success of the Funncofrades lies in how they manage to combine faith with an element of current culture. According to Daniel, “it is a fun way to bring children closer to Catholicism.”

“Although our Funncofrades may have a certain similarity with other brands, the objective is that these dolls serve as a tool so that children begin to understand the Passion of Christ from a young age, in a physical and accessible way,” he explained.

Furthermore, Daniel recalled that “there are already religious texts adapted with children’s illustrations, and this is another step to spread the faith in an enjoyable way.”

Although the pop style may generate criticism, its creator remains calm: “I have received both good and bad reactions, but as I always say, it never rains to everyone’s liking. “We must respect all opinions.”

However, he acknowledged that most of the comments are positive, as many value creativity and the way in which these articles help children get closer to faith.

“It is a way of bringing God in a fun way, not only as a religious figure, but as something that is part of the cultural universe of children,” says Cava.

This initiative is also driven by the desire to continue expanding its catalog. “We have plans to include more characters, such as saints, and we are working on new models that will soon see the light of day,” he commented.
