Fruto del Madero arrives for the first time in Peru with music, worship and prayer

The Colombian group Fruto del Madero, born from the community prayer of the rosary and music, arrives for the first time in Peru to offer several concerts.

Led by Tomás Romero, in 2025, the group has visited Mexico, the United States and participated in the Youth Jubilee in Rome, where they were part of the community of Catholic singers who composed the anthem.

In an interview with EWTN News in Peru, where the group has already performed in the southern city of Arequipa, Tomás highlights the faith of Peruvians: “The people are special, you feel that the faith here is very strong and the fact that some traditions are preserved kind of excites you. It has been very nice, the people are also very receptive, very warm,” he said.

How was Fruto del Madero born?

Tomás explains that it all started when he and some friends began praying the rosary in 2015, without thinking that a community of faith would be born. “A lady had told me to start. I lasted a year inviting people and no one came. And then after that they started to arrive. Nicolás Vargas arrived, who did play and started singing. Then my cousin Sofi. The three of us started singing.”

“Then the pandemic arrived (in 2020). Holy Week and we did some virtual activities together with Felipe Gómez, who is also in this spiritual accompaniment. And after Holy Week we said ‘well, let’s pray to see what our Lord gives us to the group that had no name.’

“And as a result of thinking about where this comes from the Holy Rosary, the passion of Christ, Holy Week, the resurrection. So we said ‘Fruto del Madero'”, which is what the community and the musical group are now called, which has Saint Gema Galgani as its patron saint.

The center of all the action of the musical group and the community, Tomás specifies, is the prayer of the Holy Rosary. “Every Thursday we meet to pray the rosary with 200 young people of different ages,” he highlights and shares that they also prepare young people for Confirmation, do activities during Holy Week and missions in different places in Colombia.

Why evangelize through music?

“A priest told me that it is difficult for someone to memorize after the Eucharist or take a text verbatim, but it is much easier for someone to come out humming a song and remember from head to toe the melody of its message,” responds Efrén Rivera, a Colombian Catholic musician who accompanies Fruto del Madero in the concerts they offer in Peru.

“I believe that the enemy has known how to use it precisely. So we have to be cunning, we have to use all the arts, all the didactic means that God gives us to be able to grow in faith and to be able to communicate it in the best way,” he emphasizes.

Quality Catholic music

“When one hears something of low quality and that perhaps does not communicate in the best way, that is not made, inspired in the best way by the Holy Spirit, then it is not contagious, it is not something that is contagious,” Efrén continues.

“In the same way, something that is made with the best that one has to give, is definitely guided by Him, I believe that being the one who makes the invitation, does not simply say yes,” he adds.

The Colombian musician then comments that “the tools, I believe that always what is at hand, the way in which one can knock on doors, in which one can improve in terms of quality, is there, implicit or explicit, but also provided by God, so I believe that it is a matter of doing it, of dedicating oneself fully and doing it with the best quality, because we know that it is always the best for God.”

Can you make a living from Catholic music?

“I believe that it is not about music but about God, it is possible to live from God and through music. We have to put a little more affection into it, from the heart and that implies many sacrifices because in the end it is an apostolate and a vocation too,” Tomás comments to EWTN Noticias.

“So I believe it can be done if it is God’s will,” he highlights.

Thanks to the Medjugorje Peru Center Foundation, Fruto del Madero is presented this Friday the 24th with Peruvians Nathalí Paredes and Nickolas García in a concert that has already sold all its ticketsand will offer another one tomorrow, Saturday the 25th at 4:00 pm in the auditorium of the Colegio San José de Cluny.
