Former schismatic nuns of Belorado: Bishops of Spain praise Bishop Iceta for his work in the case

The spokesperson for the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) has positively valued the work carried out by the Archbishop of Burgos, Mons. Mario Iceta, as Pontifical Commissioner to resolve the controversy of the schismatic ex-nuns of Belorado.

The Auxiliary Bishop of Toledo and Secretary General of the EEC, Mons. Francisco César García Magán, has explained his “support for the very laudable work, of great patience, more than that of Saint Job,” carried out by Mons. Iceta since The Vatican gave him the authority to face the challenge of the Poor Clare community of the Monasteries of Belorado and Orduña.

“Patience of Saint Job and attitude of the father of the prodigal son,” the episcopal spokesperson stressed, “because he has left his arms open to them.”

Bishop García Magán made these statements when appearing before the media to report on the development of the meeting of the Permanent Commission of the EEC met in Madrid at the end of last week, in charge of preparing the Plenary Assemblies and carrying out their agreements. The Archbishop of Burgos belongs to this body due to his membership in the Executive Commission of the EEC.

The case of the former Poor Clare nuns of the Belorado Monastery came to light on May 13, 2014, when their former abbess published a sedevacantist manifesto and a schismatic declaration.

Pope Francis appointed Bishop Iceta as Pontifical Commissioner. On June 21, after a canonical process, it was established that the ex-nuns had committed the crime of schism and the next day their excommunication was declared.

On September 17, the Archbishopric of Burgos launched the legal mechanism for the expulsion of former religious women from the monasteries they occupy.
