Origin in the Second War
The original development of this model dates back to World War II, when the automaker was part of a government competition to build a capable and robust vehicle to move around the battlefield.
The Ford model had been baptized with the name General Purpose (General Purposes). But he mentioned it to her with the initials of those words, GP, whose sound in English sounds like “yi-pi.”
This is where one of the theories of the origin of the name of the Jeep brand comes from, which was born for general use after the Second War, when it began to sell the civilian version of the CJ.
Ford had built more than 270,000 GP for the allied forces. Many soldiers who returned from the war to the United States purchased a surplus Army GP for work and off-road use.
But they were too small and cumbersome for civilian life, according to Ford research from the early 1960s, so the company developed a more refined, spacious and durable off-road vehicle to meet this. Thus the Bronco was born.
The original Bronco was revealed on August 11, 1965 and is the most evolved and similar to a current SUV from an American manufacturer, after the appearance of the International Harvester Scout, precursor of the category.
The early Bronco featured a rugged body-on-frame design with short front and rear overhangs, high ground clearance, and a short wheelbase for maximum off-road capability.
This model occupies a special place in popular culture and has appeared in more than 1,200 films and 200 songs. Since Ford ended production in 1996, Broncos have continued to grow in popularity among collectors and enthusiasts.
