Every year, thousands of pilgrims meet in the Mariano Sanctuary, located in Portugal, to participate in the massive candle procession, one of the most emblematic and moving rites in Fatima. The celebration consists of bringing the image of Our Lady to the altar of the prayer enclosure, in a solemn walk illuminated by candles, during the night of the 12th.
The procession takes place in the esplanade of the sanctuary and begins at dusk. The faithful, coming from different parts of the world, argue burning candles while praying the rosary, in an atmosphere of deep devotion. The image of the Virgin is carried in Andas along the enclosure, accompanied by songs and prayers.
This procession commemorates the first appearance of The Virgin Mary to the three shepherds —Lucía, Francisco and Jacinta – on May 13, 1917. According to tradition, the Virgin revealed the spiritual power of the Holy Rosary, and their appearances continued on the 13th of each month until October 13, the date of the last and most famous manifestation, known by the “Milagro del Sol.”
