Fires in Ecuador: Catholic Church in Quito launches solidarity campaign

The Catholic Church in Quito (Ecuador) launched the solidarity campaign “Quito needs your fraternal heart”, which seeks to help all those affected by the fires in the country’s capital, which left some injured and considerable material damage.

CNN in Spanish reported that the Mayor’s Office of Quito declared an emergency on September 26 in response to the fires that intensified on Tuesday in several parts of the Ecuadorian capital.

Pabel Muñoz, mayor of Quito, indicated that the Emergency Operations Committee (COE) made the decision to declare the emergency after the recommendation of a technical report. The measure seeks to strengthen coordination between authorities.

Muñoz also said that along with the more than 600 firefighters fighting the fire, 1,600 police officers and 180 members of the army are working for security and to address the emergency.

On September 25, the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office announced that it began an investigation to determine the causes of the fires.

According to the newspaper The Trade of EcuadorMayor Quito indicated that, since June 21, more than a thousand fires have been recorded and more than 2,000 hectares are affected.

Along with the more than 100 evacuated families, 44 people have been injured, at least six houses destroyed and the city has been engulfed in smoke.
