Cartographer, navigator, polyglot, Korea’s first martyred priest, the life of Saint Andrew Kim has been condensed in the film Birth, a large-budget production that premieres in Spain on February 14, coinciding with the beginning of Lent.
Andrés Kim Dae-geon was born in August 1821 into a noble Catholic family. Baptized at the age of 15, he studied at the seminary in the then Portuguese colony of Macau (in present-day China), at which point the film begins.
The Korean saint, played in the film by actor Yoon Shi-yoon, was ordained a priest in Shanghai in 1845 by the French missionary bishop Mons. Jean Joseph Ferréol.
