In the midst of the various reactions generated by the statement Begging for confidenceMons. Rogelio Cabrera López, Archbishop of Monterrey and President of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM), called on Catholics to an “affective and effective communion” with Pope Francis, also urging them to join his pastoral proposals.
Begging for confidence, published on December 18, 2023 by the Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith with the approval of Pope Francis, allows Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples and couples in irregular situations in a pastoral and non-ritual way. This declaration has generated divisions within the episcopate worldwide, with bishops issuing statements that welcome, sometimes cautiously, or reject the document.
On January 11 of this year, the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), after reaffirming its “communion with Pope Francis”, determined that the blessings proposed in Begging for confidence “cannot be carried out in Africa without exposing themselves to scandals.”
