Eucharistic miracle promoted by Pope Leo XIV is declared of national interest in Peru

The Government of Peru declared “of national interest” the recognition as the Eucharistic city of Ciudad Eten by the Eucharistic miracle that occurred there in 1649, a prodigy that the former Bishop of Chiclayo and now Pope Leo Leo XIV promoted.

This May 17, the Official Gazette El Peruano published Law 32337whose unique article establishes: “Recognition is declared of national interest as a Eucharistic city to the city of Eten, located in the city district of Chiclayo of the department of Lambayeque.”

This declaration is given “within the framework of the Decree Law 23211, which approves the ‘Agreement between the Holy See and the Republic of Peru’, in order to promote their customs and local tourism, and generate a positive impact on the economic sectors related to said item”.

The law has been approved by Congress and promulgated by the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, who will head the Peruvian delegation at the inaugural Mass of Leo XIV.

Jesús León Angeles, coordinator of the Milagro Eucharista Peru 1649 Group, said through the social networks of this organization that “not only is Eten or Lambayeque, but all of Peru that asks with respect and faith to the Pope Leo XIV that is soon recognized the Eucharistic miracle that occurred in 1649 and thus Peru can count on its Eucharistic city.”

“Now it’s time to add efforts to make the construction of the sanctuary come true in the field of 11 hectares that our Pope Leo XIV achieved when he was a bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo,” he adds.

Eten’s Eucharistic miracle in the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru

On June 2, 1649 in the town of Santa Magdalena de Eten, at the Mass of the eve of the solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Child Jesus appeared in a consecrated host.

The miracle was repeated on July 22 of the same year, when the Mass was officiated in honor of Santa María Magdalena, Patroness of the place. That day two appearances occurred: the first of the child again and the second three intertwined hearts that symbolized the Holy Trinity. Unfortunately, hosts have not been preserved.

In June 2019, Mons. Robert Prevost, who sought the formal approval of the Eucharistic miracle by the Vatican, explained to Aci Prensa that “the story, the data, the devotion in the continuity of these 370 years is quite documented”, such as with the “testimonies in the archives of the Franciscans in the city of Lima”.

In June 2024, Pope Francis granted a jubilee year and plenary indulgence in Peru to those who pilgrimage to the Santa María Magdalena parish of the Eten City district, for the 375 years of the Eucharistic miracle.

Now, Pope Leo XIV has in his hands the formal approval of the Eucharistic miracle he promoted and of which he is devoted.
