Elections in Mexico: Given the murder of candidates, cardinal asks that security be guaranteed

The Archbishop of Guadalajara (Mexico), Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega, has urged the national government to guarantee that the June 2 elections “take place in a climate of freedom,” since 58 people related to the political contest have been murdered.

During a press conference on April 21, the cardinal expressed his concern about actions that threaten “freedom of choice,” warning that they seek “for a party to win or for a certain person to win.” According to the cardinal, this “eliminates the citizen’s right to choose.”

In this context, Cardinal Robles Ortega pointed out the importance of security during the electoral process as a means to guarantee “that citizens choose freely, and form their criteria.”
