Formula 1 is mourning. This Thursday the death of Eddie Jordanformer chief of the team that was his property and carried his own name, and a fundamental man in Michael Schumacher’s career, seven times world champion. The Irishman was 76 years old and had been diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer at the beginning of last year.
“It is with a deep sadness that we announced the death of Eddie Jordan, the former team owner of Formula 1, television and entrepreneurial commentator,” said the family statement, who revealed that Jordan “died in peace with his family at his side in the early hours of this Thursday in Cape City.”
The Jordan team, based in Silverstone, competed between 1991 and 2005 and, after multiple name and property changes, now runs like Aston Martin.
His relatives pointed out that Jordan “was working until the end, after communicating during the day of St. Patrick – on March 17 – his ambition for the London Irish Rugby Football Club, which he had recently become pattern.”
“Eddie and Jordan Gran Prix were known for their image of Rock & Roll, contributing a fun and illusion element to the F1, as well as surrendering above what is expected consistently,” says the statement.
In addition, they remember that many Formula 1 pilots owe their career to Jordan and renowned champions such as Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill were part of their team: “He brought a lot of charisma, energy and Irish charm to all the places he was going to. We all have a huge emptiness without their presence,” the family added.
The news of his death caused a wave of tributes by outstanding figures of Formula 1. Stefano Domenicali, CEO of the championship, was one of those who expressed: “We deeply saddened the loss of Eddie Jordan. He was a unique, brilliant and unique protagonist of an era of F1”.
