IV Easter Sunday: “My sheep listen to my voice”
The reading of the Gospel is taken from the St. John’s story (Jn 10, 27-30) who collects a fragment of Jesus’ speech, who presents himself as the good shepherd who is able to give his life for his sheep, because his love has no measure. Jesus knows his sheep and they recognize him: only He is able to give eternal life.
Jesus will pronounce a speech in which it is revealed how the unity of God is with his flock. Jesus is not a “salaried shepherd”, he is a pastor who loves, and that is why sheep recognizes him. If something threatens the sheep, he will defend them with his life. And they know their pastor, as the pastor knows them; in the same way as the father knows the son, and the son to the father-”the father and I are one”-. The Lord is the pastor who will unite to the fold and will make this a single flock. Finally Jesus recalls that his flock has been entrusted to him by the Father, and that is why “nobody will take it away.”
«How can we hear the voice of the Lord and recognize it? In the preaching of the apostles and their successors: in it the voice of Christ resonates, which calls communion with God and the fullness of life, as we read today in the Gospel of St. John: «My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and will never perish, and no one will snatch them from my hand ”(Jn 10, 27-28). Only good shepherd custody with immense tenderness to his Gray and defends her from evil, and only in him the faithful can make absolute confidence. ” (Papa Benedict XVI, Queen of heavenApril 25, 2010).
Gospel according to St. John (Jn 10, 27-30)
At that time, Jesus told the Jews: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand. My father has given me, and he is superior to all, and no one can snatch them from the father’s hand. The father and I are one.”
