In the colony, continues the producer of the film, “the crown tax was the fifth real – I wish we now paid so few taxes – and a large part of that stayed in America to pay for everything that was done, the administration , salaries and the machinery of the empire. From that part, what arrived in Spain was really not much.”

López-Linares also points out that, “as Guadalupe Jiménez Reyna, the great Mexican historian of the film, says, right now, in two or three years, the Canadian companies that operate in America will achieve in two or three years the same amount as the exploitation that “It was taken out in 300 years.”

The director of the film that premieres today in Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru and Ecuador, also highlights that, in Latin America “without the Catholic faith this would have been a massacre, something tremendous, it would have been a war of extermination and of course there would have been no miscegenation.”

“I felt like I had an obligation to make” the film Hispanoamérica

López-Linares specifies that the documentary, which took him around a year and a half to make, was done “because I felt I had the obligation to do it and because I think it is necessary for us to realize who we are, recognize each other and Let us be able to look at each other, without believing those stories that we have been told, which only serve to divide us.”

In addition to Guadalupe Jiménez Reyna, the film features various historians such as Adelaida Sagarra, Marcelo Gullo, Carmen Iglesias, Enrique Krauze and Juan Miguel Zunzunegui.

When asked why these participate and not others, the director of Hispanoamérica indicates that “90% of the experts who speak in the film are Americans and the other 10% are Spanish.”

“The film does have an American vocation and I think that, within my possibilities and my knowledge and the research we have done, I have found the best, the best I could, and I think it is extraordinary,” he highlights.

Why Latin America?

Explaining the full name of the movie Latin America, song of life and hopethe director comments that he chose it because “words are important and we should not be confused by names that other people give us, like Latin America, which is a French invention, later exploited by American universities, and in which there is no “We recognize each other.”

“I think the correct term is Latin America and that is where our common history is summarized. And a song of life and hope is a loan from Rubén Darío because the film is full of beauty and the music is very important and that is why it is a song. And hope also permeates the entire narrative.”
