Director of Caritas Jerusalem: “There is no ceasefire in Gaza”

The director of Cáritas Jerusalem, Anton Asfar, assured that “there is no ceasefire in Gaza, the bombings continue,” during a meeting with students organized this week by the Charles Péguy Chair of the Catholic University of Valencia.

“Last weekend, an acquaintance of mine and a relative of his, who refused to leave Gaza City, went out to look for food and wood to make a fire and have disappeared,” Asfar said, adding that “their relatives know nothing about them.”

He also summarized that “the situation is terrible, there is no food there, there is no clean water. Right now, Gaza is a ghost city,” said the head of Caritas of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

As an example of the humanitarian crisis that is being experienced in the Holy Land, Asfar reported that in a Caritas medical center installed in the Gaza Strip “they currently have 300 patients admitted with wounds caused by the bombings.”

Although to date Caritas services have helped thousands of people affected by the war, this work is seriously compromised: “They no longer have supplies of medical supplies and in the south, where Israel was not supposed to bomb (after its support for the peace plan proposed by Donald Trump), attacks continue to occur.”

“In addition, the conflict in the West Bank and Jerusalem is escalating, there is a serious situation of unemployment, scarcity of resources,” he added.
