Despite pneumonia in the two lungs, Pope Francis breathes autonomously

Pope Francis is able to breathe autonomously, without mechanical ventilation aid, despite the bilateral pneumonia he suffers and affects the two lungs, as confirmed by Vatican sources.

In addition, the Holy Father feels occasionally in the armchair that has available in the room of the tenth floor of the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital where he has been admitted since last Friday.

The director of the Vatican Press Office, Matteo Bruni, reported that the Pontiff has passed his fifth hospitalized night. In line with the previous days, he explained that after waking up, he has had breakfast and that he has then dedicated himself to reading some newspapers.

The pneumonia that the Holy Father suffers implies an inflammation of the pulmonary alveoli that is usually generated by a pathogen that enters through the respiratory tract and affects the lungs. It occurs more frequently in bilateral way, that is, when, as in the case of Pope Francis, it affects both lungs, and their magnitude depends on the patient’s response.

According to the information provided so far by the Vatican, the medical team that serves the Pontiff has changed three times of therapy. That is, antibiotics have been tested until they are adequate.

The diagnosis changed on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (local time) when the Vatican announced that the Pontiff suffered bilateral pneumonia, according to the results of the CT (computed axial tomography) control.

On Monday the alarms jumped when it was reported that Pope Francis faced a “complex picture” with a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract.

Vatican sources also confirmed that, in all likelihood, the Holy Father will receive the visit of the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, throughout the day.
