A multitude of faithful accompanied the procession of the Virgen del Carmen in the Historic Center of Lima on July 16, a city of which is “Perpetual Mayor.” Among the participants was Fr. Grover Cáceres Rivera, the Superior Mayor of the Barefoot Carmelites in Peru, who stressed that Mary is “Mother of Hope” who invites the Gospel of his son Jesus to make life.
Speaking to Ewtn News, the priest invited Catholics to “approach Mary, our mother, who is a mother for each of us. She is the mother of hope and invites us to follow our Lord, striving day to day to make life all the word, the gospel of our Lord.”

The Virgen del Carmen in Peru
The Carmelite priest explained that “this devotion begins more or less in the seventeenth century with that desire to spread the devotion to our mother, the Virgin Mary, in a special way in this vocation of the Virgen del Carmen. It is the virgin of the scapular that gives us as a sign of belonging to the Carmel family, as a sign also of consecration to our mother, but also a sign of our part of our part.
Father Cáceres also said that the scapular of the Virgen del Carmen “is also a sign of commitment on our part. Anyone who carries the Holy Scapular is called, invited to live following the example of Mary, Our Mother. Just as Mary lived the Gospel, everyone who carries the scapular is also called to live the gospel.”
The Superior Carmelita also stressed that the devotion to the Virgen del Carmen is deeply rooted in Peru and that it can be found in many parts of the country such as Carmen de la Legua and neighborhoods high in Lima; or in Paucartambo in Cusco.
The Virgen del Carmen is a mother who takes care of us every day
María Fernández, head of the group of Cantoras del Carmen de Lima, shared with Ewtn News that she is already 27 years old accompanying the Mother of God in this invocation, “and I can testify to other sisters, that the Virgin has done very large miracles, as in the time of Covid, who saved many brothers and sisters.”
Camila Ramos, a young devout from the Virgen del Carmen, said in turn that “the Virgen del Carmen is a mother who takes care of us every day, accompanies us and gives us comfort above all.”
Camila recalled that his grandmother, who died this year, was the one who instilled in them and that is why they now have the commitment in their family to “follow tradition and devotion.”
