Cross illegally removed in Spain recovered in time for Easter

On Friday of Sorrows, the Calvary Cross of Bechí (Castellón, Spain) regained its place, just in time to shine during Holy Week, as ACI Prensa has learned for the first time. Five years ago, the City Council had decided to move it inside a cemetery, claiming that it was a “Franco” vestige and in application of the Historical Memory Law approved in 2007.

The norm establishes, in its article 15, “the removal of shields, insignia, plaques and other objects or commemorative mentions of exaltation, personal or collective, of the military uprising, the Civil War and the repression of the Dictatorship.”

However, this rule “will not apply when the mentions are of strictly private memory, without exaltation of the opposing parties, or when there are artistic, architectural or artistic-religious reasons protected by law.”
