Costa Rica: Initiative of the Catholic Church delivered clothes to hospitalized children

The children of the Cardiology Unit of the National Children’s Hospital in San José (Costa Rica) will receive a warm gesture of humanity thanks to the donation of hypoallergenic cotton hats and boots, made by faithful Catholics and people of good will.

Social Pastoral – Cáritas of the Diocese of San José launched a call which began on March 16 and concluded on April 22, in which it was requested to make cotton hats for newborns to children aged 4 years.

The campaign, named “Interwoven Charity,” resulted in the collection of 460 knitted hats and 98 pairs of boots, which were delivered by the Catholic institution to the Cardiology Unit of the National Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, June 5.

In Press conferenceDr. Karina Araya, representing the National Children’s Hospital, explained that the donated material “is of great importance”, since it works to “maintain the appropriate temperature” of the children admitted to the Cardiology Unit.

Likewise, he pointed out that these articles help to “avoid complications for their development, for their cellular function, to avoid infections and other complications after a surgical procedure and also for their support and comfort during their hospital stay.”

Dr. Araya expressed her gratitude to “all the people who participated in the campaign with so much love,” because “this is a gift that comes from the heart and I am sure that all the children and their families will feel the human warmth of the little hands that made them.”

Johanna Belavita, member of the Social Pastoral – Cáritas, assured that the people who participated in the project were grateful for the opportunity “to be able to use our gifts and put them at the service to be in solidarity with other people.”

In addition, he stated that he knows that the material given is accompanied by prayers “for all the little ones who are hospitalized and also for their families, and for the doctors and staff of the National Children’s Hospital who care for them.”

For his part, Father David Solano Chaves, episcopal delegate of Social Pastoral in the Archdiocese of San José, pointed out that this initiative also “is an urgent call to unite many hearts, capacities, ways of being and making love visible. bye bye”.

He added that “commitment to charity entails solidarity and justice that transforms life and economic forms and gives life opportunities to those we discard from other areas.”

According to the priest and hospital authorities, this project represents a first approach between the Catholic Church and the health center, opening the door to future joint initiatives.
