Av. Del Libertador and Mercedes was the corner where this Sunday the Catholics of Montevideo met for, despite the rain, participating in the traditional procession of Corpus Christi, the feast of greatest tradition in the Uruguayan capital, whose beginnings date from the colonial era.
Originally dated Thursday following the solemnity of the Blessed Trinity, this year, as in other places, he moved to Sunday, and had a special detail: it was the occasion for the faithful Montevideans to renew their consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an act that 150 years ago carried out the Blessed Jacinto Vera and that is part of the history of the Catholic Church of the country.

With the slogan “Christ, our hope, it does not disappoint” and protected by its umbrella, a large number of faithful walked through the streets of the city accompanied by the Archbishop of Montevideo and Primado del Uruguay, Cardinal Daniel Sturla, who then presided over the Eucharist in the parish Nuestra Señora del Carmen.
Once in the temple, there was a moment of Eucharistic worship and then the archdiocese renewed the consecration to the Sacred Heart. The blessing with the Blessed Sacrament was also given, granting plenary indulgence.
In his homilythe purple stressed: “What a beautiful day we have lived! It has been a lot, among which we leave there, from the parish of the Basques, and we came with water, and then everything we have heard, and above all that we have admired, praised and blessed the Lord.”
“We are really privileged to be Christians, for being Catholics, for being able to have Jesus in the Eucharist,” he said.
“The Lord is given as food, and this is what we now get ready and prepare to live,” said the cardinal. “It is not the food that ends, but that of eternal life,” he distinguished. Therefore, he urged: “We arrange the heart then to continue the Holy Mass, to praise and bless the Lord, and, if we are properly prepared, to have the joy of receiving the sacred communion.”
The pastor of the place, P. Guillermo Porras, on the other hand, was grateful to God “for giving us this spectacular day” and the cardinal for accompanying them, as well as all those who worked in the preparation “so that it goes perfect, because for God we always give the best.”
“Long live Christ! Long live our Mother! Long live the Church!” They closed in one voice.
