After an intense debate caused by the decision of the great shopping centers of Chile to open on Good Friday, which included the voice of the Church and even a bill, there was no agreement and the date will not be inalienable holiday.
After Falabella, Ripley and Paris shops made the unprecedented decision to open their doors on Good Friday, referents of the workers’ unions met with the archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Fernando Chomali, who described as “unfortunate” this measure.

“If the State of Chile declares a holiday on Good Friday it is because it recognizes in these celebrations a good for the Chileans, while strengthening the Christian values that have nurtured and encouraged our culture and unite us around them,” said the purple.
The Labor Directorate, which supported the request of the workers, and the National Chamber of Commerce, which manifested it for considering it a “electoral opportunism” maneuver, also entered the debate.
The public state that took the discussion caused parliamentarians of the ruling and opposition to present initiatives to declare on Good Friday as an inalienable holiday. However, the Executive Power rejected the urgency of the project.
The Labor Directorate then issued an opinion for which those workers who in previous years did not work for this date will enjoy their “day of acquired rest”.
In the case of shops, as it is not an inalienable holiday, they are authorized to open their doors. “What is going to be fined is that a worker who historically did not go to work and that he is unilaterally making him go,” said Labor Minister Giorgio Boccardo, as required T13.
The calendar of Chile has five inalienable holidays: New Year (January 1), Labor Day (May 1), National Independence (September 18), Army glories Day (September 19) and Christmas (December 25).
