Luisa Argueta, spokeswoman for the march, explained to ACI Press, that the motto reflects the conviction that, despite the decriminalization of abortion, “every life we save, every life that we help the women and is a triumph for us,” underlining the importance of the cause in the face of the current legislative situation.

Since 2007, abortion has been legal in Mexico City until week 12. Argueta stressed that thanks to the joint work of institutions and people, many lives have been saved, supporting women to continue their pregnancy.

“Reconcile Mexico with motherhood”

Mexico City was the first federative entity to decriminalize abortion in April 2007, under the administration of Marcelo Ebrard, who later served as Foreign Secretary.

In an interview for ACI Press, Pilar Rebollo, director of steps for life, an organization that summons the march, recalled that this decision had a “domino effect” throughout the country. However, he regretted that, despite expectations, conditions have not changed for women: “We are still abandoned by our partners, pressured to abort, and farewells of our work.”

Rebollo said that, 18 years later, the promised benefits have not materialized. On the contrary, “60% of women who abort recover, and 70% of them do so under pressure from a third. Tell me, where is the freedom to decide on their own body?” He questioned.

In this context, Rebollo stressed that going out to the streets is a way to achieve a “reconciliation of Mexico with motherhood”, in works, schools and other areas. “Although the fight has been huge and fierce, we have saved thousands of women,” he said.

He called on young generation, especially those who, such as the decriminalization of abortion, turn eighteen, to be “the generation that demands resolutions, and who, eighteen years later, is demanding life.” He invited to be part of this story and to be thousands who “give voice to the thousands who killed his generation.”
