One year after an armed conflict began between organized crime groups in the State of Sinaloa (Mexico), the Catholic Church convened a march with the intention of sensitizing, raising awareness and contributing to ending the “wave of violence that has ravaged our people.”
The demonstration, convened with various associations, will be held this Sunday, September 7 at 9:00 (local time), starting from the staircase of the parish of La Lomita to the Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The call arises in a context of growing insecurity, especially in southern Culiacán and surrounding municipalities, marked by clashes between the children of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and followers of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
According to official figuresthese conflicts have left 1,827 malicious homicides between September 2024 and July 2025, in addition to fires, vehicle robberies and other high -impact crimes.
Go from “protest to the proposal”
In a statementThe Bishop of Culiacán, Mons. Jesús José Herrera Quiñónez, affirmed that this demonstration does not only seek to “make a feeling of indignation for this dramatic social situation”, but to become a call for both authorities and citizenship to assume the commitment of “rebuilding the social fabric from the total and categorical rejection to any real or simulated formal of justification and normalization of violence.”
The Prelate encouraged to participate in this day “with the purpose of continuing to sensitize and raise awareness to work hard for recovering our public spaces and the end of this wave of violence that has ravaged our people.”
After 366 days of clashes, the bishop said that the population “continues to shudder” for the absence of peace and solutions, so he highlighted the need to “move from protest to the proposal.”
Through this invitation, Mons. Herrera Quiñónez said that he seeks “exercise of rights, the fulfillment of duties and collaboration in social, political and cultural decisions with all the actors involved in this purpose”.
What does the Catholic Church do to contribute to peace in Sinaloa?
In addition to the demonstration of September 7, the Diocese has actively collaborated in the construction of peace.
In the statement, he pointed out that throughout the time, they have made a constant call to “the conversion and repentance of the heart to whom, opting for a life of sin, they have caused pain and misfortune.”
Mons. Herrera stressed that they have also “assumed the commitment to raise awareness and generate a culture for peace and fraternity” in various spaces. For example, the diocese of Culiacán raised his voice every time violence has hit the community directly, pronouncing publicly on different occasions so that the authorities do the same and “do not abandon the population to their fate.”
The bishop also indicated that they have launched some initiatives, such as spiritual accompaniment to families in duel, support those who have lost their income and, “no less important, we have prayed with great faith and insistence to the Lord for the Precious gift of peace in and from families for our society.”
He also recalled that the Catholic Church has maintained a close relationship with authorities, civil associations and businessmen, as well as those who “are still looking for the establishment and consolidation of peace and citizen security.”
The objective, he said, has been to encourage the population to “not faint and resign themselves to live in a social environment of insecurity, fear, distrust and destruction.”
