Catholic Church received almost 360 million euros from Spanish taxpayers

The Catholic Church in Spain has received 358.99 million euros from the voluntary mechanism provided for in the Income Tax return made in 2023 and corresponding to the 2022 fiscal year, by which taxpayers decide that 0.7% of their taxes will be allocate to their financing

According to data provided by the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), 8.77 million taxpayers checked the box that allows the transfer of funds from taxes to the Catholic Church, according to the agreement reached between the CEE and the Government of Spain in 2006, in exchange for ceasing have a direct allocation in the General State Budgets.

The percentage of Personal Income Tax (IRPF) returns that have chosen to finance the Catholic Church through this mechanism known as “the X of the Church” amounts to 30.96%.
