Catholic Church in Spain, concerned about the mental health of university students

The XXXIX Meeting of University Pastoral Delegates organized by the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) will address in its annual meeting the issue of the mental health of higher education students.

The event, which will take place on January 15 and 17 in the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares, will be inaugurated by the president of the Episcopal Subcommittee for Universities and Culture, Mons. Juan Antonio Martínez Camino.

The initial presentation, on the afternoon of Wednesday the 15th, will be given by the rector of the CEU Cardenal Herrera Oria University, Higinio Marín, entitled Understanding the mental health of young university students: state of the art, keys and challenges.

On January 16, professor at the University of Laguna Olga María Alegre and psychiatrist Eugenio Chinea will discuss the psychological factors in the mental health of young people. In the afternoon, the cultural researcher Diego Blanco and the psychologist David will star in the panel titled Hope and support.

The morning of Friday the 17th is dedicated to preparing proposals and evaluating the training received.

According to a study published by the Ministry of Universities In July 2023 on the mental health of Spanish students, more than half have ever consulted a health professional for a mental health problem.

In addition, a prevalence of depressive symptoms and moderate and severe anxiety was observed in one out of every two students surveyed. Regarding suicidal ideation, and clinical or severe insomnia, the prevalence is one fifth of those who participated in the study.

The study also details that depression, anxiety and insomnia affect girls more.
