The Catholic Church in Mexico highlighted the importance of the family and its care, warning that if it does not protect it “we are not going to change a social reality stalked by violence, murders, aggressions, polarization, depression and suicide.”
“We cannot ignore that the family’s crisis is also a crisis of society. When family ties cracks, solidarity fades, the commitment is diluted and the community is fragmented, ”says the primed archdiocese of Mexico in the editorial of his weekly, from the faith, entitled “Repair the family to restore the social fabric.”

Mexico and a growing crisis of violence
The six-year period of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), predecessor of the current president Claudia Sheinbaum, was the most violent in the modern history of Mexico, with 199,621 registered homicides.
According to Ranking of the 50 most violent cities in the worldcarried out every year by the Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice, 20 of the 50 most violent cities in 2024 were Mexican, and seven Mexican towns are among the top 10 on the list: Colima, Acapulco, Manzanillo, Tijuana, Ciudad Obregón, Celaya and Zamora.
“The family is the first place where you learn to love”
Remembering the homily of Pope Francis on the occasion of Mass in the X World Meeting of Families in 2022, the Archdiocese points out that the Holy Father “has told us that the family is the first place where you learn to love and it is important to keep it away from selfishness, individualism, the culture of indifference and discard, and thereby avoid the risk of losing its DNA, which is’ the welcome and the spirit of service.”
In addition, remembering the message that the Pontiff delivered after the celebration of June 25 of that year, the Archidiocesan publisher points out that the family “is called to ‘sew’ the fabric of society creating relationships and multiplying love and life”.
The archdiocese of Mexico stressed that “in the family we would have to feel known, respected, valued and loved. It should be the place where we experience God’s love through our loved ones. ”
In addition, he warned that “sometimes indifference, selfishness and individualism threaten to erode these fundamental ties and weaken family structures and, with it, the social fabric.”
“It’s a fact. If we do not take care of families, we will not change a social reality stalked for violence, murders, aggressions, polarization, depression and suicide, among other problems that we face today. ”
Strengthen communication and promote “a culture of service and delivery”
Next, the archdiocese advises to begin repairing the families “strengthening communication and dialogue within homes.”
“And second, promoting a culture of service and delivery, in which parents are testimony of generosity and delivery for their children.”
The family, he stressed, “is not only a place of personal growth, but also a space for evangelization and commitment to society.”
“As Christians, we are called to defend the family, strengthen and testify with our own lives family love. The challenge is great, but hope is greater, ”he said.
At the conclusion, the Archdiocese of Mexico said that “if each family decides today to live the Gospel of Love, if each home becomes a small school of service and reception, then we will be able to restore the social fabric.”
