The Catholic Church in Mexico, through Cáritas Mexicana, has launched a large national aid network for the thousands of affected by torrential rains, which left dozens of colonies in Reynosa underwater, and who have claimed the lives of two people.
“On March 27, 2025, the city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, faced torrential rains that caused severe floods in various parts of the city,” says a statement from Cáritas on March 28.

Fr. Francisco Gallardo López, responsible for the Social Pastoral in the Diocese Matamoros-Reynosa, reported the difficult situation: “Population shock, flooding in much of the city, collapse of roads, affectation of hundreds of homes, interruption in the services of electricity and drinking water and water pollution for mixing with wastewater.”
Given this situation, the bishop of Matamoros Reynosa, Mons. Eugenio Lira, said that 16 collection centers, 13 in Reynosa and 3 in Matamoros, in addition to 8 temporary shelters in Reynosa have been established.
In a video posted on the social networks of the diocese, the prelate said that “we are suffering from what they are suffering” in Reynosa “because of the floods caused by the storm. We are asking God for you and we are doing our best to help you.”
“I thank the priests, deacons, consecrated and faithful people who have been supporting rescue tasks, who have opened shelters and have been offering water and food,” added the bishop, who also extended their thanks to fishermen from nearby towns that arrived “with their boats to support the rescue and distribution of food.”
“Let’s continue asking God and helping the brothers who need our support and be for them witnesses of hope,” he concluded.
