National Day of Prenatal Life is celebrated in Costa Rica thanks to executive decree number 28043-S, approved on August 19, 1999, during the government of Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Echeverría.

“As pastors of the Costa Rican people, we are pleased to recognize the essential achievement that, as a Nation, we have achieved by incorporating, within the legal framework that governs us, the recognition of human life from the moment of conception,” highlights the statement from the bishops.

The protection of the unborn as a “person and citizen” in “their entire gestation process,” the text continues, is more important “at times when in other latitudes, some very close to our country, the culture of throwaway is promoted.” and the disregard for respect for life from its conception to its natural end.”

For them, the bishops of the Catholic Church in Costa Rica encourage the faithful to remain “alert to the danger represented by certain positions that lead to error by making people believe that the embryo does not deserve the respect and maximum care that as a society we must give it.”

These positions, they warn, promote “on the contrary, ideas foreign to the tradition of respect for life that characterizes the Costa Rican people.”

To conclude, the prelates encourage us to rejoice “for each human life that is in its gestation process, beginning from fertilization, and let us see in each one of them the love of God reflected in his greatest creation, the human being.”
