Catholic Church calls for the family in the face of deep demographic transformation

The Catholic Church in Mexico called on society and the Latin America authorities to take care of the family as a commitment to the future, highlighting that “protecting the family is to protect the morning of our society.”

In the recent publishing house Of its weekly from the faith, the primed archdiocese of Mexico pointed out that the region faces “a deep and silent demographic transformation, but by accelerated steps, and its consequences are already felt in the social fabric.”

This reflection is based on the study Changes in demographic structures, Prepared by the Network of Latin American Family University Institutes, which examines new forms of family organization in the region.

According to the editorial, the conclusions of the report show that “birth rates decrease in a sustained way, marriages are reduced, divorces increase, unipersonal households multiply and population aging ceased to be a distant threat to become a palpable reality.”

Given this scenario, the Archdiocese called for not seeing this phenomenon only as a matter of figures, but as a reality “that deeply transforms everyday life, human relations and the very foundations of coexistence.”

“The family, understood as the primary core of society, is the great protagonist – and also the great victim – of this transition. When links weaken, when loneliness replaces belonging, and when aging is not accompanied by support and affection structures, the result is a more fragmented, more vulnerable and less resilient society,” he said.

The archdiocese also stressed that the data portray a region where “it ages without sufficient generational relief and with increasingly fragile family ties”, and warned that “the number of deaths is already greater than births.”

He also warned that “without solid family structures – based on love, commitment, co -responsibility and mutual care -, the entire society suffers” so it urged the authorities to which the public policies that are generated “must treat the family as a social priority.”

Among the proposals, he pointed to policies that “value life, that accompany responsible maternity and paternity; that protect the elderly without isolating them; who promote family conciliation; and that strengthen the links between generations. Poverty prevention, mental health, integral education and digital inclusion cannot be designed outside the family: they must be nourished by it.”

The Archdiocese of Mexico concluded by stressing that the demographic transition is not only a technical challenge, but “a call to take care of the family as a vision of the future. Today more than ever, protecting the family is to protect the morning of our society.
