Catholic Advent and Christmas traditions in Latin America

The celebration begins with carrying a candle, with prayers and singing Christmas carols. At the end of singing, it is traditional to break a piñata with a stick, which signifies the strength that God gives men to put an end to sin, all while singing songs.

At each posada, and until Christmas night, participants are usually given a “bonus,” which consists of sweets, cookies, and seasonal fruits.

The balcony windows

At the initiative of the Archdiocese of Montevideo (Uruguay), for some years now you can see balconeras in the streets of Uruguay, cloth cloths with the image of the Holy Family and with the inscription “Christmas is Jesus”, which are installed in the balconies of the houses.
