He was ordained a priest in Rockville Center on May 30, 1992.
Before becoming bishop, Henning served in various roles in the Archdiocese of New York, including parochial vicar of St. Peter of Alcántara in Port Washington, New York, and associate professor of Sacred Scripture at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, as well as rector of the seminar.
