The Archbishop of Bogotá, Cardinal Luis José Rueda Aparicio, stated that “there will be no total peace in Colombia or in any Latin American country as long as there is drug trafficking,” and that this scourge must end “with global and comprehensive measures.”
In a published interview in the newspaper El Tiempothe cardinal added that these global measures, that is, “not just those of one country,” must involve “communications, science, agriculture, the economy, politics, the arts, academia, religion.”
When answering questions about total peace—one of the policies of Gustavo Petro’s government—the archbishop pointed out that “peace is an everyday task” and hoped that an agreement can be reached that puts an end to the actions of the National Liberation Army (ELN).
