Cardinal Mamberti repeats the call of Pope Francis to rediscover the pleasure of worshiping God

In the ninth and final mass of the novelty, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti has recalled the call of Pope Francis to rediscover the taste for the prayer of worship of God, because it is a practice that “we lack today.”

Cardinal Mamberti, Protodiácono and therefore in charge of announcing the Pope to be chosen in the conclave, celebrated the Eucharist in the Basilica of San Pedro with the cardinals who also participate in the general congregations during these days.

In his homilythe purple repeated the words that Pope Francis Pronounced at the Epiphany Party of 2024: “Brothers and sisters, we have lost the habit of worshiping, we have lost this ability that worship gives us. We rediscover the taste for the prayer of worship. (…) Adoration we lack today.”

Cardinal Italian reflected on the reading of the third Easter Sunday, in which the Catholic Church remembers the episode of miraculous fishing and that was Jesus’ third encounter with his disciples after having resurrected.

“Love is the keyword on this page of the Gospel,” explained the purple, indicating that after sharing the food the dialogue of Christ is given with Peter after the episode of the Sanhedrin, in which the apostle denied the teacher three times. “The triple question of the Lord and the triple answer of Peter,” he said.

“The first two times, Jesus uses the verb ‘Amar’, a strong word, while Peter, aware of betrayal, responds with the least demanding expression ‘I love you’, and the third time Jesus himself uses the expression ‘want’, adapting to the weakness of the apostle,” he said.

Cardinal Mamberti recalled that, at the time, Benedict XVI commented on this dialogue. “Simon understands that his poor love is enough for Jesus, the only one he is capable of. (…) It is precisely this divine adaptation that gives hope to the disciple, who has known the suffering of infidelity.”

“Since that day,” Benedict XVI added, “Pedro ‘followed’ the teacher with the clear conscience of his own fragility; but this conscience did not discourage him, because he knew that he could count on the presence of the resurrected next to him. (…) and thus also shows us the way.”

The protodiacon indicated that San Juan Paul II shared, at the Mass for the 25th anniversary of his pontificatethat every day he developed in his heart “the same dialogue between Jesus and Peter (…) He, aware of my human fragility, encourages me to respond with confidence as Peter: ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you’. And then he invites me to assume the responsibilities that he himself has entrusted to me.”

Cardinal Mamberti said that “this mission is love itself, that the church is already served, and that the apostles assumed” with the strength of the spirit they received in Pentecost “, emphasizing that God must be obeyed before men.

“We have all admired how Pope Francis, encouraged by the love of the Lord and taken by his grace, has been faithful to his mission to the maxims of his forces,” he said. “This ability that gives adoration was not difficult to recognize in Pope Francis,” said the purple.
