Robert Prevost, the current Pope León, was Apostolic Administrator and Bishop of Chiclayo between 2014 and 2023, when he was called by Pope Francis to be a prefect of the Dicasterio for the bishops in the Vatican. He was elected successor of San Pedro on May 8 and, at his first exit to the balcony of the Basilica of San Pedro, he remembered his “dear Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru.”

The delivery of the conclave folder, with the seal of the vacancy, took place in the framework of a solemn mass, held on Saturday, July 19 in the Santa María Cathedral in Chiclayo, chaired by Cardinal Castillo and concelebrated by Mons. Edinson Farfán, Bishop of Chiclayo; and Mons. Jesús Moliné, Bishop emeritus of that same diocese of northern Peru.

Going to Cardinal Castillo, Mons. Farfán said in the Eucharist that “with you we want to renew our commitment to be a living church that testifies communion and fraternity. Thank you for coming to our house, to this generous land of the Peruvian north, the city of friendship, which receives it with open arms.”

“This gesture so full of closeness and delicacy makes us feel even more attached to the mission of the Holy Father and invites us to pray fervently for him so that the Lord holds him in this new stage of Petrino service,” added the Chiclayano prelate.

In turn, Cardinal Castillo said that for him “it is a huge joy to visit the diocese of a holy man. You helped to do so holy. All priests always say that when we go on mission we are going to evangelize and we leave evangelized. You also with your love, with your faith you have trained this great Pope we have. And that is a grace of Chiclayo for the world.”

“We are extremely happy because the Church is soaked from Jesus’ attitudes through Roberto Prevost’s testimony, which simultaneously has assumed this condition of León to open the way to face all the new things that come to be,” he added.

In his homily, Cardinal Castillo shared how the choice of Pope Leo XIV was giving, something that he considered “a miracle” since “there was never any agreement, or moorings.”

“We saw how that miracle occurred in the midst of a spiritual climate, of respect and thanks to God. We have all felt that we were convincing each other of the common good of the Church,” added the purple.

At the end of the Mass, Castillo gave Farfán a white chasulla with the image of the Lord of Miracles, the main Catholic devotion of Peru, so that he stays in the local cathedral.

Jesús León, coordinator of the Milagro Eucharistic Peru 1649 Group, which promotes in the diocese of Chiclayo this event very dear to Pope León, News told Ewtn on Monday that what Cardinal Castillo means a great “commitment he has given us to all Chiclayanos”.

For the coordinator, the election of Leo XIV “is a miracle of the divine Niño del Milagro”, for which there is the project to build a great sanctuary in the coming years.
