The Archbishopric of Valencia affirms that it was unaware of the misconduct attributed to Canon Alfonso López Benito, found dead last Tuesday, January 23, and that, if the facts were confirmed, they would be “manifestly contrary to the commitments of priestly life, freely assumed at the time of “ordination.”
Given these behaviors detailed by the local press, the Archbishopric expresses through a statement the “regret for the scandal, the confusion and the pain that they cause to everyone, very directly to the faithful, and especially to the members of the presbytery.”
“We fully trust in the action of justice, and we reiterate that in the Archbishopric we are the most interested in the prompt clarification of the facts,” continues the note, which explains how the Archbishopric “posed to appear as a private accusation, although the investigating court I reject it”.
