Brazilian Ambassador returns to post in Buenos Aires

Bitelli was called to discuss how the relationship will continue, despite the exchange of public barbs between the two presidents. The Brazilian government’s act of summoning the ambassador took place this week and a few days after Argentine president Javier Milei’s decision to choose to participate in a conservative meeting with the presence of former president Jair Bolsonaro, at Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina, and not attend the meeting of the presidents of Mercosur countries in Asunción, Paraguay.

Ambassador Bitelli will return to his post, in the Argentine capital, next Wednesday. He has been a key player in the bilateral relationship, having to apply maximum diplomacy to maintain fluidity between the various sectors of the two countries, as presidents Lula and Milei maintained their public feuds until a few days ago.

Lula reportedly told the diplomat that “Milei is complicated, but it is necessary to save the relationship” with Argentina. The objective is that friction between the Heads of State does not undermine the existing pillars between the two countries, for example, in the commercial and energy sectors, among others, built over decades of dialogue.

The news that Bitelli had been “summoned” to Brasília generated concern in the political and business spheres of Buenos Aires and the interior of the country. Brazil is Argentina’s main trading partner. And Argentina, in turn, is the main destination for Brazilian industrial exports. A diplomatic rupture could affect the relationship already built. But that was not what happened, removing the “drama” from the situation, as one diplomat observed. However, agreements that directly involve the participation of presidents – in the case of Mercosur – are suspended in view of the Argentinean alternative.
