Bolivia: Traditional Procession of the Holy Sepulcher could be declared Intangible Heritage

As every year for Holy Week, the Catholic Community of Potosí (Bolivia) congregates around the procession of the Holy Sepulcher, whose tradition dates from 1698 and currently brings together about 5,000 faithful around the commemoration of the death of the Lord.

The tour takes place every Good Friday, starting at 5:00 pm (local time) from the Temple of San Martín de Tours, and travels the main streets of the center of Potosí.

Before the tour, the faithful participate in the worship of the Cross and the Via Crucis, and then join the walk with prayers, songs and candles lit.

In addition to those who turn to load the image of the Christ, which weighs about 1,200 kilograms, thousands of faithful accompany the activity, which is one of the most important religious activities in the region and seeks to be declared intangible heritage.

This was indicated by the governor of Potosí, Marco Copa, in dialogue with The Potosíspecifying that “this week we are going to do the work of being able to raise to departmental rank that is currently having as a municipal law, the declaration of ‘intangible spiritual heritage of the department of Potosí to the procession of the Lord of the Holy Sepulcher’ of the city of Potosí.”

“We believe that this important activity of the Catholic Church must be promoted nationally and internationally,” he said.
