“The Holy Father knows our land in depth: from the hot sands of our coasts, the indomitable force of our Sierra and the green heart of our Amazon,” said Peruvian prelates, who recalled that, first as a priest and then as a bishop, he had a “generous delivery to the Church in Peru.”

This, they indicated, “particularly their work as vice president in the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, and as a bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo, and apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Callao, where he knew how to exercise his leadership with wisdom, humility and a deep love for the people of God.”

“In his evangelizing pass through our Peru, he strengthened faith with his message attentive to the needs of the humble, with his wise and prudent word that he educated in the search for truth, with his close closeness to all, believers and distant, always moved by the love of Jesus Christ,” they said.

Peruvian bishops emphasize that “in this jubilee of hope we feel blessed by the Lord”, and thanked God “for having chosen a man whose human, spiritual and pastoral virtues are very great.”

“We have had the privilege of knowing closely their testimony of life and their service to the most humble,” they said, adding that “their closeness, their timely word, their spirit of communion and their commitment to the most needy, have left an indelible mark on our Church and in our society.”

The bishops then assured their prayers for God to grant Leo XIV “a fruitful and bright pontificate, guided by the Holy Spirit, for the glory of God and salvation of the world.”

“May their ministry be a source of unity, hope and renewal for all humanity,” they asked.

“From Peru, we express to His Holiness our subsidiary affection, our obedience in faith and our devotion to his Petrino Ministry,” they added.

At the end of his message, the bishops trusted the new Pope to the Lord of Miracles, to the Virgin Mary, to Santa Rosa de Lima and San Martín de Porres: that “they always accompany him in this high and holy mission at the service of the Church and humanity.”
