Bishops of Santa Fe in Argentina ask that the essential role of the Catholic Church be recognized in New Constitution

The bishops of the five dioceses of the province of Santa Fe, in Argentina, requested that the new provincial constitution include an explicit mention of the Catholic Church, in recognition of its historical, cultural, spiritual and social contribution.

In a statement released by the agency Aicathe prelates underline that this request “does not respond to a search for privileges”, but that it is “a gesture of responsible and respectful recognition” towards the Catholic community and all the religious expressions present in the province.

“A Constitution not only institutionally organizes a province: it also represents it. And it cannot faithfully represent the Santa Fe people if it makes a dimension that historically crosses it,” the bishops express.

The statement bears the signature of Mons. Pedro Torres, Bishop of Rafael; Mons. Ángel José Macín, Bishop of Reconquista; Mons. Eduardo Martín and Mons. Ernesto Fernández; of the Archdiocese of Rosario; Mons. Sergio Fenoy and Mons. Matías neighbor, of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz; and Mons. Han Lim Moon, Bishop of Venado Tuerto.

Bishops remember that the Catholic Church has accompanied the reform process since its inception, with contributions on issues related to the dignity of human life, institutional quality and integral ecology.

They also value the majority opinion of the Commission of Declarations, Rights and Guarantees for their recognition of autonomy, cooperation and equality in religious matters, but warn that not explicitly mention the Church “generates a vacuum that cannot go unnoticed.”

The provincial Constitution in force in Santa Fe is 1962. In December 2024, the local legislature approved the “Law of Need for Reform” authorizing the modification of 42 fundamental articles.

In April 2025, the 69 “Constitutional Constituents” were elected, which are in charge of the reform initiated on July 14 and has a period of 40 days, with 20 more days of extension, of being necessary.

The Catholic Church actively participates in the reform process in Santa Fe – which is called the desire of the founder Juan de Garay, who in 1573 wanted to honor the Santa Fe de Granada (Spain) together with the Catholic faith – defending rights such as the objection of consciousness and freedom of worship.
