“An economy that seeks subordinate benefits is imposed, violating legality,” the bishops stressed.
Likewise, they stated that they are concerned about the “growing citizen insecurity that hits even the most vulnerable sectors.”
The bishops also referred to the frustrated coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo in December 2022. This event generated an extensive social protest that included regrettable episodes of violence and property damage. The seriousness of the situation was reflected in the death of 70 Peruvians, including civilians, police and military.
“The deaths have not yet been clarified. An effective investigation and the necessary reparation have not been carried out, increasing the animosity of the most affected regions with the Government,” the statement indicates.
