Bishops of Ecuador reject ruling on gender transition in schools

The Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference expressed its firm opposition to a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court known as the “Salinas Case” that orders the implementation of protocols in the educational system to accompany children who wish to undergo a gender transition, even from the age of 5. age.

The ruling, issued on January 8, requires a school in the city of Salinas to apologize to a five-year-old minor of Spanish nationality, who, according to her parents, identifies as a girl and would have suffered discrimination.

In addition, it orders the Ministry of Education to develop a support protocol for children and adolescents in similar situations.

The Ecuadorian bishops expressed their concern for what they consider a “dangerous violation of the integrity of minors.” They argue that the ruling ignores children’s lack of maturity to understand the implications of a gender transition.

They also consider that it underestimates the difficulty of correctly diagnosing gender dysphoria in childhood and does not consider the social impact of allowing legal gender changes in minors. Furthermore, they claim that he ignores the right of parents to educate their children according to their principles.

The Episcopal Conference points out that in the last three years, the Constitutional Court has promoted an agenda that they describe as “misnamed ‘progressive'”, which, they say, promotes a “culture of death and dehumanization.”

They also mention that three judges have denounced that the Court is adopting postulates of gender ideology without considering the consequences for children.

They also express their concern about the “Amada Case” that could legalize sex change in minors, including hormonal treatments and surgeries.

The bishops call on society and the Government to defend children and the right of parents to educate their children “in accordance with their values ​​and beliefs.”
