Republican Congressman Christopher Smith, chairman of the US House Subcommittee on Global Human Rights, said there is still work to be done following the release of Bishop Rolando Álvarez of Nicaragua.
“The lives of these courageous Church leaders in Nicaragua are no longer in immediate danger, but they continue to yearn for protection and respect for the fundamental rights of those who still suffer abuse of their human rights and punishment for practicing their faith,” the congressman said in a January 14 press release sent to ACI Prensa.
Yesterday, the Nicaraguan dictatorship deported two bishops and several priests and seminarians that it was holding captive, and sent them to the Vatican. Among them is Mons. Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa.
