In the first session of permanent formation for the clergy of the Primate Archdiocese of Mexico, Father Mario Ángel Flores Ramos, former rector of the Pontifical University of Mexico, consultant of the International Theological Commission and director of the Observatory of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM), warned about two “origin defects” of the declaration Begging for confidence of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), which allows the blessing of same-sex couples in an irregular situation.
On January 8, in a virtual session with the Mexican priests, Father Flores Ramos began by specifying that Begging for confidenceissued on December 18 with the signature of the prefect of the DDF, Cardinal Víctor Manuel “Tucho” Fernández, “comes to oppose a statement from two years earlier, (…) which is a response, a answer of the Congregation (DDF)” which in March 2021 established that the Church cannot bless same-sex couples.
“Does the Church have the power to impart? No. She has no power to impart (the blessing to same-sex couples). Then comes an explanatory note, but the answer is simply no, emphatically not,” she adds.
