Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, presided on December 14 in St. Peter’s Basilica at the episcopal consecration ceremony of Bishop Rubén Darío Ruiz Mainardi, the Argentine who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Benin and Togo.

As a priest, Bishop Ruiz Mainardi served for more than 20 years in the diplomatic service of the Holy See.

Until his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio, he served as head of the Personnel Office of the General Affairs Section of the Secretariat of State.

Originally from the province of Córdoba and ordained a priest in 1991, Mons. Ruiz Mainardi has a degree in Dogmatic Theology and a Doctor in Canon Law.

In the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See, he served for the Pontifical Representations in the Republic of the Congo and Gabon, Slovenia and Macedonia, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Cuba, the Central African Republic and Chad, and France, and most recently in the General Affairs Section of the Secretary of State.

In October, the Pope appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Benin and Togo, whose Apostolic Nunciature, based in Cotonou (Benin) has been vacant since July 9 of this year, when the Holy Father transferred Archbishop Mark Gerard Miles to the diplomatic mission of the Vatican in Costa Rica.

He was consecrated bishop on December 14, 2024, at the age of 60.
