Argentina’s international appeal against military arrest in Venezuela

Argentine Nahuel Gallo, 33, was arrested in Venezuela almost a month ago, when he entered the Caribbean country across the border from Colombia. According to the Argentine government and his family, Gallo traveled to meet his wife and the couple’s young son and presented all the necessary documentation to legally enter the country governed by Nicolás Maduro. Gallo is part of the Argentine Gendarmerie, which is the country’s militarized police.

For several days, after that 8th of December, no one knew of the gendarme’s whereabouts. Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich blamed the Maduro government for the lack of information about Gallo. The Maduro government, in turn, said that the Argentine would be part of an “international right-wing conspiracy”. This week, Casa Rosada formally denounced the case before the International Court and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The Argentine government considers that Gallo was kidnapped by Maduro.

The video footage, released on Thursday, shows him walking in a prison yard alongside two other men wearing the same blue clothes that would be worn by inmates. This Friday, the Organization of American States (OAS) stated that the Argentinian’s detention is “a crime against humanity” and demanded “his immediate release”.

The situation occurs just a few days before the presidential inauguration in Caracas. Maduro announced that he will take office for another term. His opponent, Edmundo González Urrutia, who claims to have been elected, arrives in Buenos Aires this Saturday, beginning a tour of some Latin American countries. He has repeated that he will be in Venezuela on inauguration day. But analysts say it has to be seen to be believed, as Maduro would not allow himself to return to the country.

He requested political asylum from the Spanish government after considering himself persecuted by Maduro following the presidential election in July last year. At the same time, five people remain at the Argentine embassy in Caracas, guarded by Brazilian diplomacy, after having been part of the campaign of González Urrutia and opposition leader María Corina Machado.
