Argentina: These are the new authorities of the Argentine Episcopal Conference

Gathered in their 125th Plenary Assembly, the bishops of the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA) renewed their authorities for the next triennium.

In this way, the position of President of the Episcopate remained in the hands of the Archbishop of Mendoza, Mons. Marcelo Colombo, who until now served as 1st Vice President. He succeeds Bishop Oscar Ojea, Bishop of San Isidro, who completed two terms at the head of the CEA.

He Cardinal Ángel Sixto RossiJesuit Archbishop of Córdoba, will be 1st Vice President; and the Bishop of Jujuy, Mons. César Daniel Fernández, will be 2nd Vice President.

Cardinal Rossi has been part of the Episcopate since December 2021, and was created a cardinal by Pope Francis in September 2023. He has a long history at the head of the social aid foundation Manos Abiertas, of which he is the founder.

The presidents of the remaining episcopal commissions, the two councils and the four episcopal delegations, as well as the regional delegates of the Permanent Commission, continue to be voted on by the bishops during Wednesday morning, which began with the Eucharist in memory of Saint Artemides Zatti, whom the Church – especially the Salesian family – celebrates today.

The celebration was presided over by the Archbishop of Santiago del Estero and Primate of Argentina, Mons. Vicente Bokalic – who will be created cardinal on December 7 -, accompanied at the altar by bishops of Patagonia, Mons. Fernando Croxatto and Mons. Esteban Laxague.

The Assembly of Bishops continues this Thursday with the vote on the budget and a report by the participants of the Synodal Assembly in Rome, held in October. Likewise, they will advance in the planning of the Jubilee Year proposed by Pope Francis.

The closing Eucharist of the Assembly will be on Friday, November 15 at 12:00 p.m. in the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, where the prelates will deliver the fruits of this meeting to the patron saint of Argentines.
