Argentina suspends chicken imports from Brazil

Argentina’s Health Surveillance Agency has decided to suspend the purchase of chicken meat and poultry by -products from all over Brazil. The National Service of Health and Food Quality (Senasa, in the acronym in Spanish) reported in the statement that imports will be suspended until Brazil is considered again free from the disease.

Argentina’s decision was made after China and the European Union suspended these imports. The focus of avian flu was recorded in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, just over 600 kilometers from Argentina. Like China and the European Union, Argentina is usually restricted to the purchase of the entire country and not only from the municipality or state where the focus was detected.

Only in April this year, after two years of the Avian flu registration in its territory, Argentina had its chicken exports to the Chinese market.

In this Friday’s statement, Senasa determines even greater rigor in the surveillance of farms.
