Argentina: Stole Reliquia de San Juan Pablo II of Cathedral

The cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the Prelature of Esquel (Argentina), was the victim of a robbery that shocks the Catholic community: on Friday, February 7, they stole from the temple a relic of St. John Paul II.

The sacred object lacks material value, but has enormous importance for the Catholic devotion of the place. To subtract it, the thieves broke the glass of the showcase in which it was exposed.

The prelate of Esquel, Mons. José Slaby, requested any information that helps recover the relic and emphasized that its value is spiritual, not material.

In dialogue with Red 43Mons. Slaby said: “On Saturday, when the cathedral opened a lady realized that the relic of John Paul II had taken. A symbol that arrived in 2015 and is a very painful loss for our community.”

Its importance lies in “What John Paul II means for his weight in the conflict with Chile, and today someone took it, it was looking for material value, but although it shines it is not gold, it is painting,” said the prelate.

The local community makes a campaign on social networks With the purpose of expanding the search for relic, reiterating that its value is only spiritual. They stressed that custody is made of a metallic material with golden paint, without significant material value.

Police are working on the identification of the possible authors of the incident, analyzing the recordings of the security cameras located in the vicinity of the cathedral. This was reported by the portal EQnotasciting statements by Commissioner Emir Azocar, head of the First Esquel Police Station.
