Argentina remembers Luigi Giussani, of Communion and Liberation, whose cause for canonization advances

Regarding the opening of the testimonial phase of the cause of canonization of Don Luigi Giussani, founder of Communion and Liberation, the Catholic University of Salta (Argentina) will offer an exhibition and dialogue tables about the Italian priest.

The activities coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Communion and Liberation movement in Argentina, and their objective is to publicize his person and his work. They will take place at the Buenos Aires headquarters of UCASAL (Av. Pres. Roque Sáenz Peña 950), City of Buenos Aires.

The exhibition is titled “From my life to yours” and the opening will be on October 15 at 7:00 p.m. It will remain until Friday, October 18.

Within this framework, two dialogue tables will be held that will have as their starting point interventions by Father Giussani, to recover the contribution he has left through his works in the field of work and education.

The first of them, under the title “Work is the total expression of the person: What does it mean to be a worker?”, will take place on October 15 at 7:30 p.m. and is based on the book “The self , power and works”, by Don Giussani.

In reference to the world of education, the dialogue table “Education cannot forget the heart. What then is the task of the educator?” will be presented on Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m.

To present about Giussani’s contribution, especially through his work “Educating is a risk”, Dr. Carlos Hoevel, master in Social Sciences and researcher, will be present; and Dr. in Education and Master in Educational Research Gracia Clerico.

Who was Luigi Giussani?

Luigi Giussani was born in Desio (Italy), on October 15, 1922. He was a priest, founder of the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation. He is considered one of the main exponents of contemporary Catholicism in Italy and Europe.

Father Giussani affirmed that “the Christian event, lived in communion, is the foundation of the authentic liberation of man.”

His interest in art led him to state that truth is recognized by beauty. In “Communion and Liberation” we talk about a privilege granted to aesthetics.

Currently, the “Communion and Liberation” fraternity has a presence in around 70 countries. Its purpose is to promote a Christian education matured by its members and to collaborate with the mission of the Church in all areas of society.

Luigi Giussani died in Milan (Italy) on February 22, 2005, due to circulatory and kidney failure.

In addition to the Communion and Liberation movement, the Sisters of Charity of the Assumption consider him their founder, and other institutes such as the San Carlos Fraternity and the Memores Domini Association, have him as their spiritual father.

In what phase is your Cause of Canonization?

In April 2024, the Archdiocese of Milan (Italy) announced that it would begin collecting testimonies in order to open the cause for canonization of the Servant of God Luigi Giussani.

The first public session of the so-called “testimonial phase” took place on May 9 in the Basilica of Saint Ambrose, presided over by the Archbishop of Milan, Mons. Mario Delpini.
